An Experiment with Dr. Susan Rogers (Prince, David Byrne, and more)

She's worked with many famous music artists as an engineer and producer, Then she left it all to explore brain science. Now I want to see how Substack handles podcasts.

I did a podcast with a woman named Susan Rogers a year ago when a book she had written (“This Is What It Sounds Like”) on music’s impact on the brain had come out. This was actually my second conversation with her and we’ve since become friendly, trading emails regularly and even met up one day in Nashville. After a quick lunch we went through a nearby music museum and I got to look at loads of historic gear with someone who had used most of it. It was easily one of my most memorable days of 2022.

Most people latch on to the fact that she was Prince’s personal sound engineer during THE BIG YEARS of his career. If you’re not sure what I’m referring to, let’s just say her first day on the job was also the first official day of recording the “Purple Rain” album. But I find her to be so much more than that. I’ll get back to talking about moe directly related to cancer stuff incredibly soon but I wanted to see how Substack handled podcasts. (Hint: there’s a transcript!)

This originally aired as part of my Random Redux Review podcast series. I never really stopped doing it but haven’t posted an episode in 10 months.I also don’t think my approach to exploring how podcasts could sound really resonated with listeners. I intentionally added echoes and music moments that I think most people just assumed was bad audio mixing. The podcast still lives on most podcasting apps in case you don’t want to wait for me to post more episodes from it here. And FYI I don’t really plan on doing that except for a couple episodes with some interesting music people talking about cancer stuff in addition to their careers.
